LLECHI Y DEAR
(SLATE OF EARTH)

by Molly B

About the film:

BA graduate film • UK • 15:00 • English & Welsh

A cultural document, exploring the cosmology of the slate quarries of north west Wales/gogledd gorllewin Cymru. Having been a microcosm for her growing up - exploring this passage-in-time of geology and of society, casting her imagination out of the small valley to all the places across the world to which the slate has been shipped - Molly explores how all these different stories tie up, and hold a living place within this valley today. Once the mountain slopes of Elidir Fawr, they became a site of industry and exploitation, then a liminal space of reclamation, to at present a UNESCO site.

Through this creative anthropological project, she seeks to animate thoughts on sustainability by challenging the current relationship (or division) between ‘nature’ and ‘culture’, and asks what role governing bodies, such as UNESCO, may play here.

!!! Molly is currently working on a feature film based on the version we showed during VisAnth films event. If you’d like to see the film we presented, please message the artist directly !!! TRAILER available below

About the filmmaker:

Molly B Silvester Thomas is a visual anthropologist who engages and explores the world using the visual as a touchstone. Molly is interested in the contentious contemporary position of the human in the world, and creatively explores the dissonant binaries of ‘nature’ and ‘culture’, and the potential held in the speculative symbiosis of the concept of a ‘natureculture’, explored by Donna Haraway in her writing ‘Staying with the Trouble’. Spanning and intersecting the disciplines of anthropology, art, literature and science, Molly’s work is concerned with creativity through a holistic combination of animism through visual engagement. In her own words, “creativity as a means of knowledge production and the understanding of anthropology have given me the will and grounding to enact social change. Social interaction is a big part of all this, so if you feel inclined please get in touch :) “
