Inspired by Catherine Russel's and Benjamin Walter's theories on archiveology and appropriation, the work explores memory and approval, it’s self-reflecting and asks the bigger question of what we do with archives (family archives especially) by and of those who are no longer here to explain and consent. Through letters, the work explores the materiality of archives and how they are physically and emotionally difficult to navigate, both alone and together.
Poorly sorted and thrown haphazardly into shoeboxes after my grandmother ripped them out of the many albums that took up too much space on her shelves; I tried to cruise through some of my great grandmother’s photographs together with my grandparents. My great grandmother was a photographer 100 years before me, and through her photos of people and places that seem both familiar and far away, I look for my own belonging in the same landscapes.
