THE LANGUAGE
THAT KILLS
by Persia Dogmetchi
About the film:
personal research project • public archive • 4:00 • English & Arabic
This film is a video essay that delves deep into the subtle yet impactful role of media semantics in shaping perceptions of Israel’s occupation, annexation and ethnic cleansing of Palestine, by focusing on the sanitisation and whitewashing of language. It sheds light on how media outlets, often claiming objectivity, take sides under the guise of neutrality. The project serves as an introduction to the Palestinian genocide, strategically crafted to resonate with Western audiences who may be unfamiliar with the harsh realities faced by those directly impacted. This film is a powerful tool to expose the disparity between perceived and actual knowledge, bridging the gap between Western and non-Western gazes.
About the filmmaker:
Persia Dogmetchi (she/her) self-describes as a furious filmmaker and anthropologist dedicated to shedding light on the ethical dimensions of Western involvement in non-Western conflicts, genocides, and wars. Her unique background as a mixed-race woman from Egypt, Iran, and England, raised in Spain, has fuelled her exploration of the disparities between Western and non-Western perspectives. The exploration of identity, both personal and collective, remains a central theme in her filmmaking journey.
Persia’s primary focus lies in merging anthropology with activism, particularly addressing the lack of ethical engagement by the West in conflicts it has played a role in instigating. Through her work, she aims to challenge and educate Western audiences, providing a critical examination of their perspectives while delving into the complexities of non-Western experiences.
