JAFAICAN
by Finley Gilzene
About the project:
Cyanotyope & video installation · 15:05 · UK · English
Jafaican explores themes of reconnection with culture after a consistent feeling of shame about your race and identity. The work is both self-criticising, and self-enlightening. Through the creation of both cyanotypes and film, Fin has come to realise that the surrounding culture of Britain is to blame for that disconnection. The cyanotypes are a series of self-portraits that in an act of vulnerability, explores their body, and in turn the black body, and the politics surrounding black bodies in Britain. The installation also features a short film containing an interview with the artist’s nan and auntie discussing their experiences in Britain, in order to reconnect with a lost element of his identity.
