COMMUNITY TIES

by Demi Abiru

About the project:

multimedia installation (sculpture, video) · UK · English

Demi Abiru’s physical and digital installation archives thoughts, stories, and memories that came up during the ‘Liming’ sessions previously facilitated by the artist. It integrates three key traditions: 'Liming', the Trinidadian tradition of social gathering and storytelling; 'Ifá', an ancient Yoruba divination system; and 'Adire', a traditional Nigerian hand-crafted fabric technique. The database captures  the diaspora's diverse cultural histories, and archives with alternative methodologies. The sculptural work adheres to the notion of opacity, as it will be fully understandable only to those willing to engage further with ‘Adire’ and ‘Ifa” - practices explored at the workshops organised by Demi.
